Have You Got Rabbit Fever?18 Sep

No, it’s not a new epidemic to be scared of. Rabbit Fever is a quirky documentary by amateur director Amy Do. Rabbit Fever follows a series of bunny loving competitor who all compete at the ARBA National Rabbit Convention to have their bunny honoured as number one.

While dog shows and even cat shows are nothing new, rabbit competitions are certainly not the norm. Nevertheless, the ARBA rabbit show draws a crowd of more than 20,000 bunnies plus owners.

Typically adult members compete for the ‘Best in Show’ award while teenage bunny owners compete for the titles of ‘Rabbit King’ and ‘Rabbit Queen’.

It’s by no means an ordinary pet show, but perhaps that’s what drew Amy Do to it. Neither is Rabbit Fever an ordinary documentary, the insightful film has received coverage from numerous media outlets including USA Today and Eye for Film.

There are many that think that pet insurance for rabbits is an unusual idea. Just wait till they hear about the ARBA National Rabbit Convention! Truly the world of bunnies and more importantly their owners has gone hopping mad!

Guiness Records Announces Oldest Living Rabbit11 Sep

As you known by now, this rabbit insurance site loves to get news of record breaking bunnies. Today’s scoop comes all the way from the United States, from a rabbit who has made it into the Guinness World Records.

A rabbit living in Carroll County in Maryland has been recognised as the world’s oldest living rabbit. According to an article in the Associated Press, the rabbit’s owner – Jennifer Russell – received confirmation earlier this month.

Heather – the record holding bunny – was adopted in 1995 with papers that said she was 2 years old. Owner Russell believes that now makes Heather somewhere between 15 and 16 years old.

According to NBC Philadelphia, in her prime Heather was a “diva”, growling if the cat got too close.

While most rabbits live to be around 6 or 8 years old, Heather’s lengthy lifespan is put down to excellent care and good genes.

Although Heather takes the record for oldest living rabbit, the oldest rabbit on record actually lived to be 18 years and 10 months, according to the Guinness World Records. Flopsy, the world’s oldest rabbit ever, lived in Tasmania in the 1960s.

Leona Lewis Saves Bunny’s Life22 Jul

We don’t often get to feature a celebrity in Bunny News, at least not a human one anyway. In the past we have featured the likes of Benny, contender for world’s biggest rabbit and Jia Xiaoyu, the rabbit addicted to TV soaps.

Considering this, you can imagine how happy this rabbit insurance comparison site was to come across this star-studded story.

According to the Sun, Leona Lewis has managed to rescue a bunny from near death. Whilst shopping in Melrose in LA, the celebrity stumbled across a homeless man with a rabbit on a lead.

Confused no doubt by the fact the rabbit was on a lead she asked the homeless man what he planned to do with the rabbit. “Don’t know”, he replied, “probably eat it.”

Shocked by this brutality vegetarian Leona Lewis offered the man $100 in return for the bunny which he willingly accepted.

The rabbit now lives with her in LA where she is currently based and has been named Melrose after the street on which it was found.

According to a close friend: “She didn’t think life on a lead was any way for a rabbit to live – then when he said he was going to eat it she knew she had to save it.”

No mention has been made as to whether or not Leona has taken out rabbit insurance for Melrose. As rabbit insurance experts we would recommend Leona read this page for USA Rabbit Insurance or, if she returns to the UK have a look into UK rabbit insurance companies.

Will Benny become the World’s Largest Rabbit?13 Jul

Benny, a 22.4lb rabbit based in Oxon is hoping to break the world record for the World’s Largest Rabbit. According to the Telegraph Benny eats around £9 worth of fruit, vegetables, rabbit food and other ‘treats’ a day – a record amount for any pet surely?

Benny’s obvious route to fame would be the title of ‘World’s Heaviest Rabbit’ but the Guinness World Records no longer allow this title as it caused a number of owners to overfeed their bunnies in an attempt to win the title.

Benny however still has a chance of running for the title of world’s largest rabbit and it certainly seems like he has a very good opportunity of winning.

Benny – according to owners Martin and Sharon Heather – measures around 85cms, which is almost three feet in length. Benny’s sheer size certainly makes him a giant bunny, but can he actually break the record?

The previous record breaker was a continental giant doe known as Amy. Amy – who sadly died in May – measured 81.5cm, so – assuming the Heather’s measurements are accurate – Benny has a very good chance of becoming the World’s Largest Rabbit.

Benny has already gained quite a reputation, having built up a major following on Facebook. With more than two hundred supporters there are a large number of people hoping for Benny to break the record, but at the end of the day the judge’s decision will be final.

According to a spokesperson for the Guinness World Records: “The longest rabbit is currently under research as we have had a couple of contenders.”

So far it seems none of the other rabbit owners have released information about their precious bunnies, perhaps they are too scared after seeing Benny or perhaps they have the winning bunny and are just waiting for the right moment to reveal him to the world.

Bunny Lover Claims 334 Rabbits10 Jul

Last week, bunny lover Nancy Haseman was arrested for having 334 rabbits, violating a court order that banned her from owning pets for five years.

It all began 12 years ago when Haseman’s husband rescued a rabbit that a neighbour had abandoned. From there the couple gradually began rescuing more and more rabbits, keeping them all in the back garden.

Originally Haseman and her husband had tried to separate the male and female bunnies, however the males managed to hop the fence and soon all of the rabbits were at it like – well rabbits.

Authorities were notified after a neighbour complained that her garden was being eaten by rabbits.

Rescue groups, mainly House Rabbit Society have managed to find homes for around 50% of the rabbits; however the others are still being cared for by shelters and animal protection groups.

So far around $3600 has been spent on the rescue operation – spraying and neutering the rabbits.

Nancy Baseman wasn’t the only bunny lover to be arrested recently for hoarding rabbits. Last week Miriam Sakewitz – a rabbit hoarder who was caught in 2006 with around 150 live rabbits – was arrested last week in her hotel surrounded by 13 excited bunnies who were only too happy to be rescued by authorities.

Anyone living in New Mexico interested in adopting a rabbit should visit the House Rabbit Society’s website.
