Bunny Lover Claims 334 Rabbits

Last week, bunny lover Nancy Haseman was arrested for having 334 rabbits, violating a court order that banned her from owning pets for five years.

It all began 12 years ago when Haseman’s husband rescued a rabbit that a neighbour had abandoned. From there the couple gradually began rescuing more and more rabbits, keeping them all in the back garden.

Originally Haseman and her husband had tried to separate the male and female bunnies, however the males managed to hop the fence and soon all of the rabbits were at it like – well rabbits.

Authorities were notified after a neighbour complained that her garden was being eaten by rabbits.

Rescue groups, mainly House Rabbit Society have managed to find homes for around 50% of the rabbits; however the others are still being cared for by shelters and animal protection groups.

So far around $3600 has been spent on the rescue operation – spraying and neutering the rabbits.

Nancy Baseman wasn’t the only bunny lover to be arrested recently for hoarding rabbits. Last week Miriam Sakewitz – a rabbit hoarder who was caught in 2006 with around 150 live rabbits – was arrested last week in her hotel surrounded by 13 excited bunnies who were only too happy to be rescued by authorities.

Anyone living in New Mexico interested in adopting a rabbit should visit the House Rabbit Society’s website.
